5 Guitar Tips for Accompanying a Vocalist Sign up successful I’m an up-and-coming guitarist who’s auditioned for the local jazz quartet. They call me in to play along with the other members in a live setting and I’m given a lead sheet with chords. I read over the sheet and look for tempo markings, key changes, and form. Once I’ve done that and begin playing I remember my place in the ensemble. This is paramount to being a great sideman. You are providing a rhythm and chord structure to a song. It’s imperative to do so without blaring out your part and playing too loudly for the melody to be heard. Finding the pocket, or the main beat of the groove, will allow the soloists greater freedom and give the group a tight, focused sound. My next step as a sideman comes when I visit an open mic and there’s a vocalist who doesn’t have someone to play her song. I know the tune and volunteer to play for her. As I start into the song I am deliberate with my rhythm changes and tempo of the tune. While I’m backing her up I remember to play quieter than the vocals. That means my chords and picking shouldn’t overshadow the vocals. This may mean turning your electric down or strumming lighter on an acoustic guitar. Your job as a sideman is to complement the vocals by providing steady rhythm and musical dynamics with your playing that reflect what the singer is crooning. I remember watching others back up voice majors in college and sometimes the singers were timid and afraid to sing out. It didn’t help when they had a guitarist beside them playing louder than them with their head buried in the chart, oblivious to the singer’s plight. That leads to the next point  know the form of the tune. Be prepared to play the intro and make notes of what lyrics come in when you are playing the different sections of the song. The vocal cues will help you provide the best back up for the song and ensure you don’t get lost along the way. Remember that singers are human, too, and knowing the form of the song is helpful should they forget a verse or jump to a chorus earlier than you anticipate. You’ll be able to get to that part quicker with a chart and the knowledge of the song’s form. That brings me to the most important tip  listen to the singer! I know it seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many times I’ve seen groups where the singer is laying into a vocal and the guitarist is chugging away on loud chords or playing a screaming solo over the vocals. By not working together with the vocalist you can ruin their instrument, their voice, by making them sing harder than necessary to compensate for your overly loud amp and playing style. This is not something you want to be known for, so remember:  if you can’t hear the vocals, you’re too loud. The last key is to be prepared for anything. Bring a capo along. Sometimes a key won’t work for a singer and capoing up will allow them to sing their song without you relearning the chords. Sometimes words are forgotten and they sing the song differently than you’ve learned. They may come in too early or too late on a phrase. Your part in all of this is to be flexible and make them sound great regardless of what happens along the way. By putting the singer/band first, the song ends up being the main attraction and with any luck you’ll earn the respect of the singer, other musicians, and the crowd. When you play your part and listen to the other parts around you, the music sounds best. So rock on, it’s time to shine but remember the guitar tips stated above: Know your place in the ensemble If you can’t hear the vocals you’re too loud Know the form of the tune Listen to the singer Be prepared Be flexible and make those around you sound great Applying these common sense guitar tips to your sideman work will afford you more chances to accompany singers and other instrumentalists. 3 Key Skills You Need to Ace the MCAT As every budding pre-medical student knows, the MCAT covers content learned in four very specific science classes: Physics, General Chemistry, General Biology, and Organic Chemistry. While a mastery of each of these subjects is necessary to excel on the MCAT, there are three key skills that also contribute to success on the exam. These key skills are not particular to any single MCAT section, but rather play a role on the test as a whole. While any good study plan incorporates lengthy content review, developing the following skills through full-length practice exams is just as integral to acing the MCAT. Analytical skills At its core, the MCAT is an exam that requires proficiency in analysis. Most of the exam is presented in the form of passages followed by a number of questions. In all three sections of the test, the test-makers describe raw data, whether it be via a scientific experiment or a philosophical argument. It is your job as an intrepid examinee to sift through the piles of raw data and extrapolate enough information to answer the accompanying questions. This not only involves a grasp of the content that comprises the passage, but also the ability to analyze graphs, tables, or experimental setups so you can successfully evaluate the results. Analytical skills are particularly important in the two science sections, as the modern MCAT passages tend to manifest themselves as experiments rather than simple content review. It has likely been awhile since you last sharpened these mathematical skills, so it is vital to practice and re-hone these abilities to ensure that you don't find yourself staring at a simple 'plug-and-chug' problem wondering what to do first. Be comfortable working in scientific notation as well, given that it is the most likely form in which numbers will be presented to you. With the vast amount of content you need to be able to comprehend on the MCAT, mathematical skills need to be the least of your concern as you work through that test. Take every opportunity to practice, forgoing the safety of your calculator for pencil and paper. Test-taking skills The MCAT is like no exam you've ever taken before, as it is entirely computer-based. Often when we get to know a person better the flaws we once saw become minimized. 5- Check your reactions.  You could be blowing things out of proportion and if that is true for this boss it could be how you react on many things. As a general rule there are very few things that warrant strong, negative feelings and if you have other unlikeable people you know, you may need to seek help so you can put things in their proper proportion. Even if your reactions are mostly narrowed down to the boss, chances are still high that you are over reacting and need to counsel yourself to rethink what and how you react. You may never turn into a fan of the boss. The clue that you can improve from where you are now is in the fact that your peers find value where you don’t. You can learn from your peers and do a great deal to improve your view of this person. You’re not compromising your values. When you get derailed it can mean all sorts of things like a job reassignment or even a demotion.   In other words your career heads in a direction you didn’t plan for or ever think would happen. As you go through your life, your life and career will more or less go in a zigzag pattern.   It never goes in a straight, direct, flawlessly executed manner and setbacks are part of the landscape.   That means that you need to develop the ability to be resilient.   You need to be able to recover from these setbacks so they don’t define you. Understand that resiliency is more than mental toughness â€" although you do need to develop a level of mental toughness â€" you need a recovery plan. Here are my suggestions for a recovery plan: Know it’s going to hurt. A setback will definitely put a dent in your ego.   You may be embarrassed, your feelings hurt and even angry.   That’s ok.   Give yourself a break and feel the disappointment but don’t let it rule your judgment and decision-making.   Avoid reinforcing your hurt by complaining to your co-workers endlessly.   Limit how much you talk about what happened, as it will only make you feel worse. Don’t give up on your goals. Don’t use this situation as a sign that you aren’t up for the task of getting to your goal. Your discouragement at the moment won’t last. Hold off on big decisions. The worst decision you can make is in the aftermath of a setback.   You’re emotional which is fine but you’re probably not in the best shape to make big decisions about your career.   Wait a month or two. Don’t blame. Even if _______ had it out for you, don’t blame what happened on someone else, even if it might be true.   Blaming makes you powerless and you emerge out of your situation feeling unable to guide your career in the direction of your choosing. Don’t be a victim. Regroup and make two goals. You are now in a position not of your choosing. Rather than blow it on this job because you’re acting like a big baby, vow to do so well that they question making the change in the first place.   At the same time, keep your previous career goal. Learn from the experience. Usually, there are good reasons for a move you even if you disagree.   Nevertheless, you need to think about things you could have done better and different so you can use this time to improve your skills.   You need to take another run at the job you had and now that you are wiser due to this experience, you will be better prepared the next time. Rebuild your personal brand. You have work to do to restore the right personal brand.   Don’t just go do this new job.   Think about what traits and impressions you want the management and your peers to have of you.   Be specific without making a laundry list.   Then reinforce these traits each and every day.   Consistency is the key to rebuilding your personal brand.   People will soon forget any gap you may have had. English Vocabulary Fired or Laid Off I was helping a student prepare for an interview the other day and, while doing so, we began discussing working conditions in his country. We came across two similar business-related English vocabulary words: being fired and being laid off. Do you know what the difference is between them?Let’s explore this now.What does it mean to be fired?Being fired suggests that the employee is parting ways with his/her job permanently or for good. The term may also imply that misconduct on the employee’s part was behind the firing. Misconduct in the workplace includes arriving at working late repeatedly, fraud and misuse or theft of company property.What does it mean to be laid off?If an employee is laid off, it can mean that he/she is losing his/her job because there isn’t sufficient work available to justify the salary. It can also mean that he/she might be re-employed by your company when the situation improves. Being laid off can mean that the job was lost through no fault of the employ ee.The difference between the two words can also be important if you are applying for unemployment benefit from the company afterwards. Heart Tutoring Volunteer Partner - GEM - Heart Math Tutoring Heart Tutoring Volunteer Partner GEM Heart Tutoring Volunteer Partner GEM March 29, 2019 Seal of “Efficiency” from the Best Global Endowment Management (GEM) began their partnership with Heart Math Tutoring in 2014 when Heart Tutoring was the recipient of a GEM Foundation grant. As the internal, employee-led grant team was establishing their financial partnership they also saw a great opportunity to start a volunteer partnership, with the first GEM tutors starting in the 2015/16 school year. GEM’s leadership not only encourages volunteering but prioritizes educating employees on the needs of the Charlotte community. Charlotte Atkinson was a member of the foundation committee, serves as a Portfolio Reporting Manager at GEM, and is a member of Heart Tutoring’s Community Relations Committee. As a busy community member who has always had a passion for giving back, she understands the need to find opportunities like tutoring with Heart Math Tutoring. She understands the need for volunteering opportunites that both fit into volunteers schedule to ensure that volunteers feel like they are having an impact. She shared more with us about GEM’s involvement and the effects they’ve seen around the office. How do you recruit volunteers in the office? In addition to sharing her own experiences around the office, Charlotte has hosted several Lunch and Learns with the Heart Tutoring team at their offices. These are a great way for employees to learn about Heart Math Tutoring and hear from colleagues on their tutoring experiences. Also, as a numbers-oriented group, the statistics demonstrating the math proficiency rates in CMS and the results Heart Tutoring is producing are incredibly motivating.
